Prof. Verma holds a doctoral degree from the University of Illinois Medical Center, Chicago (1994), followed by two postdoctoral stints. The first one was at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, USA, and the second at Max-Planck-Institute for Experimentelle Medizin, Goettingen, Germany.
He joined the Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 1997. He is also an affiliated faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, Center for Nanoscience, and Center for Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT, Kanpur. His work has been recognized by the Goyal Prize (2019), J C Bose Fellowship (2015), Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2010), DAE-SRC Outstanding Investigator Award (2010), Swarnajayanti Fellowship (2005), BM Birla Science Prize (2004), to name a few. He recently received the Distinguished Alumnus Award (2020) of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He is an elected fellow of Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences, India. He is an Associate Editor of Chemical Communications (Royal Society of Chemistry, UK) and serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Cell Chemical Biology, ChemBioChem, and Journal of Peptide Science. His research interests include programmable soft matter for neuronal regeneration, bioinspired nanomaterials, novel antimicrobials, and small molecule-stem cell modulation.
